stories today. after more than a year of primary campaigns and elections, the race for the white house has come down to two candidates and tonight those men will meet for the first time in a highly anticipated debate from denver. a number of political pundits have said tonight's debate in colorado will go a long way toward separating those two candid obama and governor mitt romney from a very tightly-locked race. the campaigns, though, they're downplaying the expectations from tonight's squareoff between these two candidates. now, governor romney is now saying that tonight's debate is not going to go a really long way toward determining a definitive winner. let's listen. >> in my view, it's not so much winning and losing or even the people themselves, the president or myself, it's about something bigger than that. these debates are an opportunity for each of us to describe the pathway forward for america that we would choose. >> and by contrast, the president has been preparing outside of las vegas. to his supporters, he remains confident, but he says he's not underestimating his opponent.

are two numbers that matter more when judging whether a president wins re-election or not. it's his job approval rating and where people see the direction of the country. for the president right now, his job approval rating is at 49%. disapproval at 48. our pollsters tell us that 49 is in the re-elect zone. now, look at this, direction of the country. 40% say we're on the right track. that 40% is not a great number, but it's actually the highest number we've recorded in three and a half years. let's move to the head-to-head with mitt romney. this is where the race has tightened a bit. the president's number is steady at 49. mitt romney has picked up a couple in the last couple weeks, sits at 46. what's helping him? republican voters more enthusiastic, they make it through the likely voter screen. it's been a couple tough weeks for mitt romney. that 47% mark has left a mark, if you will. when we asked, is there anything you've heard in the last few weeks that made you more favorable or less favorable on mitt romney, 51% said what they've heard has made them less favorable. that said,

-- i had done before on the 2004 race. i think i have one president, election in me. if we start a family, i would like to get one manufacture more presidential. she was okay with nap i had two candidates i liked. i asked to around people they didn't see al gore getting in. the other was john edwards. i liked john edwards at the time. and that didn't go -- there was a little bit of back and forth going on with that. and that didn't seem to be developing. so didn't look like anything was going to happen. there was one other candidates i liked. it was president obama. four years and a half years ago people back in the fall of 2006 would say things like, he's never going get elected there's no way america would elect a prime african-american you can't get elected with the name barack obama. it's actually didn't matter. i didn't know anybody in chicago. i didn't know anybody around the candidate. so it didn't look like anything was going to be happening. december 26, december 26, 2006 my wife and i were shopping day after christmas we were shopping in a borns and noble just up the road
